Some people consider gift giving an art. They buy gifts way ahead of schedule. Now that it’s almost Christmas time, many people are buying gifts as early as August to take advantage of mall sales and discounts during payday weekends or going to flea markets before the mad rush would push prices to the ceiling.

What most people I know don’t know is that gift giving has etiquette and we must be aware of it especially that it’s almost Christmas. It’s important to give a gift that suits the personality, need, lifestyle, even diet of people that will receive our gifts.

Here are a few tips on gift giving:
· Start by making a list of people who are important to you – but of course, these people have had significant impact in your life and must always be on top of your list
· Know the recipient – one must research about the gift recipient. It is not wise to give a gift that would not be appreciated nor of poor value to the recipient
· Have a wish list – having this list would definitely help the giver as to what gift the recipient would like to receive. Give this list to the recipient/s. Hence, the gift would not go to waste. It’s also important to put a ceiling on the wish list so you won’t go beyond or under the budget.

· Have a gift budget per recipient – having a budget would absolutely facilitate not going beyond your own budget in spending money for gifts. Essentially, give gifts that you can afford.
· Consider hobbies in gift giving – if recipient likes collecting stuff, then add one to his/her collection.
· Use common sense and caution – it is not good to give a gift to someone who might feel insulted with what you had given

· Wrap your gift – it gives the gift a personal touch especially if you have a hand-written note in the card which shows you care
· When possible, give the gift personally – it gives an atmosphere of warmth and sincerity. If this is not possible, have it delivered by a messenger and write a personal note for the recipient
· Give your gift on time – have your gift ready for the assigned day of gift-giving.

· It’s also never too late to give a gift – in the middle of the mad rush, some may tend to forget to include names of people in their list to be given gifts. Call the person and inform him/her that you have a gift even though it’s a little bit late.

· Food as gift – be sure that the recipient is not allergic to the food and that the recipient actually likes to eat the food

· Alcoholic beverage as gift – be sure to give the right kind of alcoholic beverage be it red or white wine, brandy, vodka, etc. Needless to say, it’ll be a waste to give a beverage that the recipient doesn’t drink at all.

· Lingerie as gift – it’s actually inappropriate to give lingerie as a gift in public. If lingerie was indeed given, it must never be squealed to anyone. Giving lingerie as gift also depends on the relationship of the giver and if the recipient especially requested for one.

· Gag gifts – these may look funny and cute but not all people appreciate receiving gag gifts especially if it has sexual undertone

· Gift certificate – this is generally considered a safe gift to give to almost anyone. However be sure that the gift certificate is effortlessly accepted in major malls that are easily accessible or to shops that are not hard to find.

· Give a gift that means you care for the recipient and not because you expect something in return or because you have a hidden agenda.

Giving a gift this season is indeed an experience that is either heart-warming or downright depressing. Some people who give a lot of gifts also get to receive a lot, some get less. Some get what they don’t like. For some who gave out expensive gifts, they end up receiving gifts that are quite cheap or inappropriate. But let us also not forget that giving a gift is to make the recipient happy or to appreciate one for the bliss s/he has extended or shared with you.
Enjoy shopping for gifts~!
