I have a Korean friend who complains of his aberrant bowel movement. Lately he has been having diarrhea, and he only thinks of contaminated fast food meals that may have caused his loose bowel movement. Recently, former Philippine president Cory Aquino was one of the high profile personalities who have succumbed to a colon-related disease. I myself complain of unusual bowel movement due perhaps to food that I eat that may likewise be improperly handled by food attendants in malls. Moreover, being a lactose-intolerant person, I also suffer from diarrhea especially whenever I eat ice cream or any food that has milk or a milk-related ingredient. The thing is, I can’t deny myself from eating food that I like so much, ice cream being one of them. Diarrhea does not deter me. But then I wonder, is it all right for my gut and my body as a whole if I continue eating ice cream? Should I have my colon examined and cleaned to make sure that my gut is healthy and remain healthy thereby reducing the risk of having a colon-related disease? I rarely see advertisements about hospitals, medical centers, or private clinics offering services like colon therapy. How do they do it? Is it an embarrassing thing to talk about with family and friends? Is it something like: “Hey, what d’you do this weekend?” “Well I went to have my gut cleaned.” ‘”Eeww! Gross!” But after reading many researches as regards the benefits and ways to clean and improve colon health, I am all for it. However, colon therapy comes with a price that not most people can afford.

Colonic therapy is a procedure of cleansing your intestinal tract and hence improves overall colon health. Apparently, the colon tends to collect quite a lot of waste matter that do not go out of your body. Instead, all the fecal wastes hang about, harden, and ferment inside your body. These toxic excess wastes heighten the risk of a colon-related disease.
Common forms of colonic therapy are: Enema, Herbal Supplements, Herbal Slimming Teas, Laxatives, Oxygen-based Colon Cleansers, and Colonic Hydrotherapy. Oxygen-based colon cleansers, according to what I’ve read, seems to be the best procedure for it removes even the most compacted fecal matter and also improves growth of healthy intestinal flora which are beneficial bacteria for optimum digestion and elimination.

Colonic hydrotherapy or colon irrigation, according to what I’ve read, is a safe and gentle procedure to cleanse and tone the colon using filtered water. It involves the insertion of a tube into the rectum. The hydrotherapist slowly irrigates your colon with warm water. He may also massage your abdomen to help break up compacted feces and mucous. After a few minutes, the colonic hydrotherapy machine gently sucks out the water through a second tube and out with it comes the impacted fecal matter, harmful organisms, and other stuff that tends to clog your colon. You could even see what’s coming out of your colon through a see-thru tube. The procedure is repeated at least six times lasting from about 45 minutes to an hour. Although having a colonic is quite a different sensation, it is generally a safe procedure.

Incidentally, colon irrigation has been practiced for thousands of years (since 1500 BC) that was invented in Egypt. Yet somehow, I have only heard of this procedure recently. Mostly, I’d hear of enema in hospitals, taking dietary herbal supplements, or fiber pills to rid oneself of constipation or to cleanse the bowels. With the growing number of people dying with colon cancer, I guess it’s high time to address this near epidemic disease through education and promotion of colon health.

Colonics generally address the following health concerns: constipation, halitosis, irritable bowel movement, digestive cramping, gas and bloating, halitosis, insomnia, persistent fatigue, skin rashes or acne, obesity, inability to gain weight, memory loss, headaches or sinus problems, aches and pains, lower back pain, frequent colds, allergies, depression, irritability, or anxiety. Hey! I think I suffer from most of the symptoms except for obesity, inability to gain weight, and frequent colds! I also hope it’s covered by my HMO. I also love eating potato chips and drinking soda! I think I need to consult a doctor about colonic hydrotherapy asap!
